RUBEDO: la lega rivoluzionaria di Tiffany
1837 RUBEDO™: a metà fra un libro di storia e una tavola di chimica, è questo il nome della nuova collezione di Tiffany, che uscirà negli stores questo marzo 2012 irrompendo sullo scenario della gioielleria mondiale con una vera rivoluzione. I laboratori orafi della storica maison della 5th hanno cercato in questi ultimi tre anni di lanciare una nuova fashionissima lega: lo scopo era quello di creare un nuovo metallo, che rappresentasse una novità rispetto ai grandi classici della gioielleria, oro, argento e platino.
L’ambizione è stata grande, quasi utopica. Un piccolo grande capolavoro chimico è stato creato, luminoso come l’oro ma malleabile come l’argento e con una peculiarità che lo rende unico: è rosa. La presenza di una certa quantità di rame, opportunamente legato con oro e argento, attribuisce al nuovo metallo una decisa tonalità rosata. Una delle difficoltà maggiori è stata quella di calcolare le esatte proporzioni che i tre metalli avrebbero dovuto avere, per realizzare contemporaneamente i tre obiettivi di luminosità, resistenza alla portabilità e colore. Il colore rosa, imperativo: i nuovi gioielli avrebbero dovuto essere l’essenza stessa della femminilità, dell’eleganza. E così sarà.
Vi starete chiedendo perché tanto lavoro quando da tempo l’oro rosa è super utilizzato… il Rubedo costerà leggermente in più dei gioielli in argento di Tiffany ma decisamente meno rispetto a quelli in oro! La maison è molto fiera del lavoro svolto, tanto che per ora non ha intenzione di brevettarne la composizione, anzi sfida chiunque a riprodurre il rubedo. Il nome stesso riecheggia qualcosa di irraggiungibile: deriva da una parola medievale che significa perfetta congiunzione tra spirito e materia.
E non dimentichiamo un plus: 1837 è la data di fondazione della maison da parte di Charles Lewis e quindi quest’anno Tifany&Co. compie 175 anni!
Indiscrezioni del settore fanno sapere che solo ed esclusivamente per il 2012, su richiesta, sarà possibile acquistare un gioiello della collezione con incisa la firma originale del fondatore.

Tiffany’s new RUBEDO Collection
Tiffany & Co stamp its mark in its 175th anniversary with a new metal called RUBEDO that glows like gold but is malleable like silver. The arrival of RUBEDO is set to bring some fun to the world of jewels. This new metal, made from a secret alloy, captures the flattering soft tones of gold yet is lightweight and polishes up to a smooth lustre.
Priced lower than gold it has the potential to add a whole new dimension to jewellery design. Now that RUBEDO is here, there is a third way somewhere between gold and silver.
The rings, cuffs and pendants of the new collection belong to the 1837 RUBEDO collection and are all stamped with the signature of founder Charles Lewis to mark the anniversary year.
I think RUBEDO is a bold move from Tiffany, but then again, these American jewellers are a pioneering lot who are willing to try out new things. Tiffany was the first American company to incorporate the 925/1000 British standard of silver purity. Largely through the efforts of founder Charles Lewis Tiffany, the U.S. government adopted the standard, and later, the jeweller’s standard for platinum (.950 pure), as well.
In the 1850s Tiffany & Co. established a silver studio, the first American school of design, which produced groundbreaking exhibits that won top awards at the great world’s fairs in the late 19th century. And with the arrival of Italian-born Elsa Peretti, a catwalk model, in 1974 humble silver was eleveated to new heights as Peretti’s clean, honed organic shapes championed silver as a serious player in the world of jewellery. The humble bean cast in silver captured the imagination of women around the world and has become a house icon.
So where did the name RUBEDO come from? In the medieval philosophy of alchemy, Rubedo was the title of the very highest achievement, when matter and spirit fused to create something of rare beauty. I will be keeping an eye on this new arrival as I expect great things to come of it. The 1837 RUBEDO collection will be in stores from March 2012.
